Juillet 2000: Launch of the Foundation
The Carrefour Group’s support for humanitarian causes was strengthened with the launch of the Carrefour International Foundation on 4 July 2000.
The Foundation aims to work within various fields in the general interest, particularly in the areas of solidarity, emergency aid, culture, education, the fight against exclusion, medical research, the environment and poverty.
July 2001: Third private corporate foundation to establish official relations with UNESCO.
May 2003: Consultative status within the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
March 2004: Appointed as one of 18 members of France’s Consultative Council for Emergency Humanitarian Action, on which only two corporate representatives currently sit.
October 2005: Start of a new phase.
The board of directors redefined the mission of the Carrefour International Foundation to ensure closer involvement with the populations it supports and to foster the organization’s greater operational efficiency.
The positioning of the Foundation was defined to promote the voluntary work of skilled staff: the Foundation operates in the 18 countries where the Carrefour Group has a presence, and relies on the functions and skills of its employees to develop programmes on the ground.
The Foundation has two main missions:

The Foundation ensures a multinational. multicultural approach and guarantees its commitment and that of the management team of the country in which Carrefour is present based on its sponsorship network.

Carrefour mobilizes to bring help to the Chinese people
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale struck China on Monday 12 May 2008 (at 2.28 pm local time). The epicentre was close to Wenchuan in Sichuan province, in the south west of the country. When the catastrophe was announced on Monday evening, the Carrefour Group - via its International Foundation - paid a grant of 2 million yuan (€200,000) to the Chinese Red Cross as an initial emergency measure. |
