Argentina : Turn cardboard collectors into « green jobs » with ARCA

Winner of the national NGO Awards launched in october, ARCA aims at professionalizing the current activity of cardboard collecters in Buenos Aires.

In south America, collecting cardboards to resell them is an illegal, precarious but very common activity for hundreds of unemployed people. In order to allow these people to increase their income and standards of living, ARCA centro de reciclado intends to professionalize, develop and industrialize their activity to create a virtuous circle of waste recylcing. The association will install a thermal press in the beneficiary cooperatives, to transform plastic remains into plaste composites, using a new eco- technology mixing it with cardboard. The collection of plastic waste will be organized in collaboration with Carrefour stores already working with a partner cooperative of the association. Apart from waste collection, the 350 beneficiaries of the program will be taught how to transform the plates into new eco-products, that will then be sold within the stores.

Carrefour stores will indeed act as key partners of this « green line "products both upstream concerning the collection of garbage, and downstream by distributing and giving visibility to the products in stores.
