Colombia : Program of lecture and writing

In 2008, Fundalectura and the Fondation Corona - Carrefour’s partners for the “Schools are part of our lives” programme - set up an educational assistance programme for children in vulnerable communities. “Palabrario” is a special programme for young people which opens their minds to new ways of thinking and prepares them for the future by helping them to better understand the world so that they can make it their own and have a role in it.

As part of the programme, 5604 children from 8 state-run schools in the municipality of Soacha on the edge of Bogotà have been able to attend speaking and literacy workshops. These teach them all about the importance of words and writing, about different strategies for reading and different types of text. Writing workshops have also been set up in which children and teachers share their experiences, the emphasis being placed on written memory.

Parents are also invited to attend. They are encouraged to read with their children, find alternative ways of communicating with them, and help them to experiment with new cultural activities through - for example - consulting books in public libraries.

Results obtained:

In order to tailor the services to children’s requirements, the association team held reading and writing tests in August and November 2008. The results of these tests indicated that:

- with respect to writing skills, the children can retell stories, but they do not always respect punctuation marks. In order to tackle this difficulty, they will be given a task designed to help them use words properly with the meaning that they are trying to convey.

- with respect to reading skills, 41% of the children understand what they are reading, while 59% do not accurately answer the questions they are asked.

- with respect to their ability to express themselves, their arguments are sometimes poorly presented.
