Colombia : Development of small enterprise networks in rural areas

The Foundation is helping to improve living conditions and rebuilding the social fabric of displaced communities in the Magdalena department, in the north of Colombia.

After 50 years of armed conflict inside the country, Colombia wants to find sustainable solutions for the thousands of displaced victims, with the social, cultural and economic upheaval that comes through losing their source of income, their land and their home.

Set up in 2009, the project aims at rural development and promoting income-generating activities. To do this it offers financial support by providing microcredit to projects that can generate 50% of family income.

The programme effectively helps to build local employment capacity, to improve the social and economic conditions of communities with the help of local institutions and funding from the European Union. It is based on three missions:

- Social: aimed at strengthening community structures and organisations through cultural events (such as traditional festivals, dances, specialty foods, etc).

- Psychological: by offering psychosocial support to victims

- Economy: based on the development of economic initiatives that can generate income and provide employment.

In order to reinforce this approach, Carrefour Foundation is funding training to organise professional production networks with the aid of Carrefour Colombia, which is also involved in parallel initiatives to help market local produce.
