Brazil : Outcome of request for Food projects

In June 2010, the Carrefour Foundation and Carrefour Brazil launched a national request for projects on the theme of food and education as they pertain to consumption and sustainable production.

As a leading food retailer in Brazil, Carrefour works with local communities to help improve nutrition in the country.

The four most relevant projects were chosen from about 100 applications based on the selection process set up by Carrefour Brazil (specific criteria, selection commitee made up of outside consultants and in-house staff, on-site visits, final approval by the Carrefour Foundation team, etc.). Each winning organization received a grant of €60,000 from the Carrefour Foundation to carry out its project.

1 – Project: “Núcleo Gastronômico da Maré e da Cidade Alta”. Organization: Ação Comunitária do Brasil do Rio de Janeiro
This project seeks to inform and educate 90 disadvantaged families living in the Maré favela (shanty town) about responsible nutrition by:
- Developing job training on the use of foods
- Giving presentations in local public schools and conducting a nutrition education campaign
- Generating income by marketing products (socially responsible snacks, etc.)

2 – Project: “UniMandalla: Project: Educação e Tecnologias Sustentáveis para segurança alimentar”. Organization: Agência Mandalla de DHSA
The project’s goal is the sustainable development of the ‘Mandalla Production” brand by:
- Developing a production unit to consoildate the existing incubator for social farming projects (100 families)
- Trainng additional families to create new production units based on previously used methods

3 – Project: “Cidades sem Fome/Hortas Comunitárias”. Organization: Organização Cidades sem Fome
This project involves consolidating community gardens in the eastern part of São Paulo. The organization will conduct the programme by:
- Creating urban community gardens
- Training communities in food production and consumption
- Encouraging families to participate in forums and conventions on urban farming
- Expanding and improving urban farming so that it becomes a matter of public policy

4 – Project: “Consolidação da produção de Alimentos Orgânicos na região da Zona da Mata, Agreste Meridional e sertão do Pajeú e Moxotó do estado de Pernambuco”. Organization: Serviço de Tecnologia Alternativa (SERTA)
The project aims to create an organic farming supply chain for producing, distributing and marketing products grown by 50 families in the Mata region (Pernambuco State) via:
- Technical training sessions
- Sales and marketing support
- Support for equipping and building two training schools
