On Monday, April 5, 2010, a storm caused severe flooding and landslides in the state of Rio, particularly in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
According to official information (April 8), the disaster has already caused the deaths of more than 200 people. The Civil Defense also gave the statement of 346 injured and more than 15 000 people dislodged or homeless.
Permanently in contact with authorities, Carrefour Brazil and the Red Cross had identified the basic needs: food, water, mattresses, blankets, linens, toiletries, cleaning products, drinking water and milk powder.
International mobilization
The Carrefour Foundation has allocated an emergency fund of over €100,000 to allow the delivery of drinking water and nonperishable food to nearly 9,800 families in the State of Rio. Donations will be delivered directly by stores’ employees in the most affected areas. In Rio de Janeiro, victims can count on the presence of 10 stores, meaning 2 500 committed employees.
National mobilization
In addition, 164 stores across the country take part in a national collect campaign from April 9 to April 19. Thus, customers and employees can place their donations in the boxes provided for this purpose at the entrance of each store. All food collected will be donated to the Red Cross who will handle the delivery and distribution.
According to Renata Moura, Strategy Director - Carrefour Brazil: ‘With the help, we can transform the lives of several people and demonstrate our commitment and attitude’.
