Argentina
Argentina : Awareness raising programme to reduce and prevent childhood obesity
Carrefour Foundation joins with Fundacion Conin to raise children’s awareness about healthy and balanced eating and the need for regular physical exercise as a way to improve their quality of life.
The mission
Founded in 1993, the Fundacion Conin (Cooperadora de la Nutrición Infantil) is tackling problems of nutrition by treating or changing the eating habits of children. It is also involved in education campaigns for families, schools and town councils.
The challenge
In Argentina, 1 child in every 3 has no breakfast. 33% of children aged 9 to 13 years eat more than 3000 calories per day, of twice what they need. Childhood obesity is a combination of genetic predisposition and an unhealthy environment. Meanwhile, 35% of children under two years suffer from anaemia.
The partnership
Following the signature of a funding agreement in 2010 by Carrefour Foundation, the project will kick off in April 2011 with an education programme in schools about healthy eating, targeting around 33,000 children and their families. A theoretical (awareness-raising) programme and a practical programme (sports, cookery classes, etc) will also be run by health professionals (doctors, nutritionists and psychologists), teachers and interested leaders from civil society. Carrefour also envisages partnering with schools located near to their stores to help the association in its work.
Fundacion Conin has been a partner of Carrefour Foundation since 2008.
