Argentina : The Carrefour International Foundation helps the Food Banks of Argentina
Created in April 2001, the Buenos Aires food bank is part of a network of 14 food banks in Argentina. It distributes food to around 5,200 people who regularly attend its canteens in Buenos Aires. Every year, it distributes around 250,000 kilos of food to its 349 social aid canteens.
In its efforts to prevent waste, the Buenos Aires food bank draws on the efforts of 200 volunteer workers in 14 regional centres.
It distributes perishable, non-perishable and frozen foods, collects fruit and vegetables and organizes annual collection drives to ensure that as many needy people get assistance as possible.
The Carrefour International Foundation contributed 205,000 euros for the extension and equipping of the food bank’s depot, which will now be able to step up its distribution capacity from 250,000 to 500,000 kilos of food per month, meaning more people will benefit from the food bank’s services.
