Russia : Samu Social Moscow
Samu Social Moskva, a charity foundation registered in Russia in 2003, was set up to help street children.
According to the authorities and a report by MSF Belgium, some 30,000 to 40,000 children and teenagers live on the streets of the Russian capital. This extremely vulnerable group receives no protection or specific aid, both being reserved exclusively for those officially registered as Moscow residents.
In 2006, two units composed of mobile teams combed the streets in north east Moscow and the city centre. They provided assistance to increasing numbers of street children for up to four or five nights a week.
Their task was also to set up initial and ongoing training courses and fieldworkers collected data to improve their understanding and knowledge of the situation, thus enabling them to take more effective action.
In 2006, they made 300 forays into the streets, met about 200 young people and delivered 1,000 First Aid treatments. 20 children received extended care, being referred to medical or other institutions able to look after them.
2006 also saw Samu Social International's support being boosted by private subsidies, which enabled Samu Social Moskva to consolidate its activity.
As a result, 2007 saw an increase in the number of young people receiving assistance: contact was made with close on 3,600 children in the streets and nearly 260 children were helped on three or more occasions.
