Belgium : Samu Social Brussels

Samu Social was set up in Brussels in 1999 to provide an urgent response in the Belgian capital to the growing problem of homelessness and all its implications. An emergency social action centre (CASU) was created in June 2001. This non-profitmaking association then assumed the mantle of the Brussels Samu Social. Its task is thus to respond to situations of distress and social emergencies by providing a listening ear and guidance, and by meeting and helping people in a critical social situation.

The position in Brussels is similar to that in Paris. The European capital, which attracts a high number of people each year, has the same categories of marginalised populations as Paris.

A freephone number is manned 24/7, receiving requests from homeless people and indications of people in need from private individuals and institutions.  A 120-bed hostel provides emergency accommodation for people referred by this helpline. They also receive initial psycho-social treatment there.

In 2007, teams went out into the streets 703 times and 164 people received help (over 7,000 instances of support).
