Poland : Catastrophic floods
The Carrefour Foundation and Carrefour Poland are working with Caritas
For the past ten days, Poland has been hit by catastrophic floods in the Oder, Vistula and Warta river basins. Donal Tusk, the Polish Prime Minister, said the scale of the floods was "without precedent in the past 160 years". On 19 May, the European Union activated its civil protection mechanism to help the country.
In order to come to the aid of victims, the Carrefour Foundation and Carrefour Poland are working with Caritas to repair some of the material damage suffered by residents.
The Foundation has donated € 160,000 for the purchase and delivery of equipment to dry out inundated buildings and clear the ground of debris.
In all, a total of 139 pumps and 139 clearing machines will be donated to the residents of 15 towns in the country (Rzeszów, Tarnów, Kraków, Katowice, Opole, Czestochowa, Bielsko Biala, Kielce, Gliwice, Sandomierz, Wloclawek, Przemysl, Lublin, Wroclaw, Plock), where some 18,702 houses and other buildings have been damaged, affecting over 66,000 victims. The machines will be delivered by representatives of Caritas and the regional directors of Carrefour stores.
Alongside the aid provided by the Foundation, several hypermarkets and supermarkets in Poland will be collecting a range of products for distribution to local associations.
