Greece : A 2nd food bank will open in Piraeus
The first food bank in Athens- which opened in December 2007 - has received nationwide recognition. Carrefour has teams dedicated to this project and its activities in collaboration with the Athens municipality meet a genuine need in a disadvantaged area of the city. In view of the excellent results achieved by the project, the Foundation decided to continue its commitment by co-financing a second food bank in conjunction with Carrefour Greece.
This food bank will open on September, 2008 in Piraeus (Greece's second largest city) in premises provided by the municipality. It will initially provide support for 200 families for a period of 6 months.
By opening this second food bank and hopefully another (final) one in Thessalonia next year, Carrefour's presence will extend over an area that is home to 60% of the Greek population.

Carrefour mobilizes to bring help to the Chinese people
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale struck China on Monday 12 May 2008 (at 2.28 pm local time). The epicentre was close to Wenchuan in Sichuan province, in the south west of the country. When the catastrophe was announced on Monday evening, the Carrefour Group - via its International Foundation - paid a grant of 2 million yuan (€200,000) to the Chinese Red Cross as an initial emergency measure. |
