An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter sacle severely affected the region of Puer in Yunnan province, China. The human cost was great, leaving a million people homeless and 300 injured.

To provide support to the populations affected, the teams at Carrefour China asked the Foundation for help in rebuilding a school that had been severely damaged by the earthquake. The 160 pupils and teachers subsequently benefited from the Hope School programme, which was launched in 2006 by the Foundation to promote the development of young people in China. Its aim is, on the one hand, to improve school conditions by offering various training modules for teachers and, on the other, to implement programmes designed to improve food safety for children and their parents.
