The winter storms caused more serious damage than any other natural disaster, including the 1998 floods. The authorities in some mountainous regions very badly affected by the bad weather had difficulty launching rescue operations.

By the end of January it was reported that 77.86 million people had been affected and that there had been 38 deaths. Material damages were estimated at RMB 32.67 billion (ie €3 billion).

About 6.87 million hectares of crops were affected in 16 provinces.

Carrefour China stepped in as the storms began. The Carrefour hypermarkets in Changsha and Zhuozhou began working with the local administration to combat this natural disaster:

  1. "Carrefour Stadium Store" donated 4,000 bags of food to the local administration: these contained water and biscuits to a market value of RMB 20,000. It also prepared 2,000 bags of food for the local Red Cross.
  2. "Carrefour Furong Store" also distributed rice and oil.
  3. Carrefour Zhuozhou responded to the needs expressed by the local administration by providing blankets and food.

The Carrefour International Foundation allocated 2 million RMB (€200,000) to the Chinese Red Cross, thus helping them to assist the most badly affected people in the five provinces: in  Hubei, Hunan, Anhui, Jiangxi and Guizhou where Carrefour has 13 stores.
