An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale struck China on Monday 12 May 2008 (at 2.28 pm local time). The epicentre was close to Wenchuan in Sichuan province, in the south west of the country. When the catastrophe was announced on Monday evening, the Carrefour Group - via its International Foundation - paid a grant of 2 million yuan (€200,000) to the Chinese Red Cross as an initial emergency measure.
In mid-January 2008, thick snow fell relentlessly in the south and east of China, affecting tens of millions of people.
For three years, VGCD (Volunteer Group for Child Development) has been running a project financed in 2007 by the Carrefour International Foundation to provide shelter, care, food, education and support for 50 children.
The severest drought in the last 50 years struck the South-West of China, affecting over 7.5 million people and 40 municipalities.
The Carrefour International Foundation supports the anti-poverty programme run by the NGO Bina Swadaya in Indonesia
Teams of Carrefour China and the Foundation are supporting efforts to rebuild one of the schools severely hit by the earthquake of the 3 june 2007
Since 4 February, the inhabitants of Jakarta and 10,000 employees of Carrefour Indonesia have been coping with the effects of severe flooding.
Carrefour Thailand and the Carrefour International Foundation have teamed up to create a fishing network in Baan Nam Khem, a community deeply affected ny the tsunami.
