The Carrefour Foundation is mobilised in the face of two violent natural catastrophes, an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude followed by a tsunami of 3 meters and the eruption of the most active volcano in the country. Ten villages of the Mentawai islands have been swept away and authorities have ordered the evacuation of over 40 000 inhabitants who live near the volcano, where several homes were destroyed.

Once informed of the most urgent needs, the Carrefour Foundation immediately decided to support victims by validating a sum of 100 000 euros. At the same time, teams from the Palembang and Yogyakarta store are organising emergency aid in the islands of the Indian Ocean in close collaboration with their local partners. Water, rice, blankets, hygiene products, masks and baby food products have been prepared and distributed in the hours following the catastrophe to hundreds of families.

In September 2010, with the help of the Carrefour Foundation, employees in the Medan Fair and Medan Citra Garden already got together in order to organize first aid for the 20 000 villagers living near the Sinabung volcano. (Financial support: 5 000 euros)
